Major-General Neville Gerald Lyttleton died on 6 July 1931 aged 85. 

He saw service in the South African War (1899-1902) and was present at the Battles of Spioen Kop and Vaal Krantz which eventually led to the Relief of Ladysmith.  

He was in command of the troops in Natal until June 1902 becoming Commander-in-Chief of the whole of South Africa after the war had ended in May.
