In the British pursuit of Boer General de Wet, Brigadier-General Broadwood’s column caught up with the rear-guard of de Wet on 24 July 1900.
In danger of being captured by Broadwood were wagons loaded with flour, recently milled at the mill in Vredefort. De Wet decided to make a stand whilst preparing to cross the Vaal River. Broadwood was outnumbered and called for re-enforcements. After a number of counter attacks, the Boers retreated, losing five wagons.
There were casualties on both sides. Amongst the British casualties were Troopers Moore, Nicholas and Tothill of the South Australian Imperial Bushmen. For gallantry in the engagement Captain N.R. Howse of the New South Wales Medical Staff Corps was awarded the Victoria Cross.
