Dewetsdorp is a town in the Free State, 75 km south west of Bloemfontein. From April to November 1900 the British occupied the town. However, on 19 November the town was invested by Boer commandos under General de Wet.
On 21 November the Boers overpowered a British picket, and from this strategic position, started with an artillery attack on the town.
On 22 November the Boers cut off the water supply to the town and the garrison was forced to surrender.
British losses were 15 killed, over 70 wounded and the remainder taken prisoner.
