Towards the end of 1900 General de la Rey was looking for an opportunity to re-equip his burghers with, especially, clothing and ammunition.

His chance came on Monday 3 December 1900 at Buffelspoort (Vanwykspruit) near present Mooinooi. On the previoius day, a large wagon train had left the Rietfontein base, a substantial British military and hospital base, bound for Rustenburg.  The attack was directed at the middle of the convoy, a convoy of wagons which was about 3 km in length.

De la Rey’s attack by 600 Boers on the Buffelspoort convoy was successful and 26 fully loaded wagons were looted.

British casualties were 18 killed and 22 wounded.
