Having occupied the ring of hills south of Colenso in mid February, Buller’s plans were now to repeat that exercise, but this time north of Colenso.

Lieutenant-Colonel Wynne was ordered to take a hill just west of Langverwacht Spruit, known as Green Hill, and the operation commenced early afternoon on 22 February 1900.

Wynne was severely wounded in the attack and throughout the afternoon, evening and into the night, favourable positions were gained by both Boer and British forces. During the night, engagements spilt over to a nearby hill on the West.

Fighting continued throughout the following date (23 February) and casualties were heavy on both sides. However, the push to relieve Ladysmith had commenced.
