Lieutenant-Colonel Gough died on 18 March 1963.

He was a young Lieutenant when ordered to the Natal front in 1899, having not completed the Staff College course. He served under Colonel Dundonald in the Relief of Ladysmith.

During the guerrilla phase of the war he served under Lieutenant-General French. He was in command of the force at the disaster at Blood River Port on 17 September 1901 where the British suffered a huge defeat at the hands of Commandant Botha’s Boers.

He was invalided home in January 1902 having been injured late in 1901.

His World War 1 service was covered in controversy and is well worth reading up on.
