Lieutenant-General Herbert Charles Onslow Plummer was born on 13 March 1857.

At the time of the Jameson Raid he was on military duty in Cape Town and was sent to Southern Rhodesia (now Zimbabwe) to disarm the police force who were apparently sympathetic towards the raiders.

At the outbreak of the South African War he returned again to Southern Rhodesia to raise a force mounted infantry to help with the Relief of Mafeking. He was also involved with the British ‘sweep’ to try and corner the Boer Commandant de Wet.

Plummer was promoted to the rank General in World War 1 and gained considerable successes at Messines Ridge and the Battle of Menin Ridge Road .

In July 1927 Plummer was involved in the inauguration ceremony for the Menin Gate memorial at Ypres.

He died in 1932 at the age of 75 and his body is interred at Westminster Abbey.
