1 March 1900, Ladysmith, after 118 days of being besieged, was finally relieved.

The Boers had fired the last shell from the Long Tom on Bulwana Hill before dismantling it and preparing it for the move. Boer convoys had been seen moving from their camps around Ladysmith.

There are a number of reports as to who was the ‘first person’ to enter Ladysmith, but from a number of reliable references it appears that Winston Churchill accompanied Major-General Dundonald, and Major Hubert Gough with the Natal Carbineers and Natal Light Horse were of the first to be welcomed into Ladysmith.
