Lieutenant-General Ian Standish Monteith Hamilton died on 12 October 1947 aged 94.

During the First Boer War he was present at the Battle of Majuba, where he was wounded and taken prisoner by the Boers. He was present at the battle of Elandslaagte at the outset of the South African War (1899-1902) and was in Ladysmith during the siege. After the siege he took command of a brigade of Mounted Infantry, and fought in 10 major battles against Boer forces, including the battle of Rooiwal.

He was twice recommended for the Victoria Cross but these recommendations were considered inappropriate because of his rank.

He is buried at Kilmadock Cemetery, Stirlingshire, Scotland.
