On 2 June 1908 General Redvers Buller died at the age of 68.
During the Anglo-Zulu War (1879) he was awarded the Victoria Cross for bravery under fire at the Battle of Hlobane.
At the outbreak of the South African War in 1899 he was sent as commander of the Natal Field Force.
Buller’s reputation was damaged by a number of defeats in the early stages of the war and he was eventually replaced by General Roberts.
