Lieutenant-General Archibald Hunter died on 28 June 1936 at the age of 79.
He started his military career in Scotland as part of the Gordon Relief Expedition, which unfortunately arrived too late to rescue Major General Charles George Gordon.
During the South African War (1899-1902) he was in Ladysmith during the Siege and led the party that disabled the Boer Long Tom on 8 December 1899.
He was part of the force that captured Johannesburg and Pretoria, before being assigned to the Free State during the guerrilla phase of the war.
