Gideon Jacobus Scheepers, after being court martialled, was convicted on all counts brought against him, except for one of the murder, and sentenced to death.
On 18 January 1902 he was executed by firing squad.
At the outbreak of the South African War (1899-1902), as part of the Staats Artillery, he saw action at battles around Kimberley. General de Wet used him as a scout and later he formed his own reconnaissance corps.
Late in 1900 he joined Commandant Kritzinger’s commando that invaded the Cape Colony. When Kritzinger returned to the Free State, he formed his own commando which became very active in subversive activities in the northern and eastern Cape.
On 12 October 1901, when he became too ill to accompany his commando, he was captured by the British.
When he was well enough to stand trial, charges were brought against him.
