Jacob Louis van Deventer died on 17 August 1922 at the age of 48.

He commenced his military career with the Staats Artillery and was involved in the first engagement of the South African War at Kraaipan.

He then saw action, under General de la Rey at Modder River, Magersfontein, Nooitgedacht and Vlakfontein.

He excelled in guerrilla tactics and campaigned with General Smuts in the Cape in the latter part of the South African War.

He was a huge man standing over two metres tall. He was knighted for services in and after World War 1.
