Leeuwkop was a farm mid-way between Bloemfontein and Dewetsdorp, on the road connecting the towns.

Boer General Lemmer had positioned himself strategically to offer protection to Boer convoys making their way to Thaba Nchu as well as to delay the advance of the British Force, under the command of Lieutenant-General Pole-Carew, making their way, via Dewetsdorp, to the besieged town of Wepener.

The Boers, totally outnumbered, took advantage of their position to hold off the attack by the British, evacuating the position overnight.

Casualties were few on both sides.
