Lieutenant-General Horatio Herbert Kitchener was born on 24 June 1850.

At the outbreak of the South African War (1899-1902) Kitchener was second in command to General Roberts. He was present at the Relief of Kimberley and saw action at Paardeberg.

When the guerrilla phase of the war commenced Kitchener succeeded Roberts as overall commander of British and Commonwealth troops, and was promoted to the rank of Lieutenant-General.  He  won notoriety for his scorched earth, and concentration camp policies against the Boers.
