O’Kiep is a town in the remote area of the North Western Cape and at the time of the South African War was the site of one of the richest Copper ore mines in the world.

More than 700 British soldiers were besieged by Boer General Jan Smuts and his commando for 30 days, starting on 4 April 1902.

For medal collectors, the Defence of O’Kiep medal is one to have in one’s collection.
