On 16 August 1900 Boer General de la Rey decided that the siege of Elands River, which commenced with the initial attack on the garrison on 4 August, had served its purpose, and withdrew his force. The withdrawal coincided with the arrival of the British relief force.

During the siege and the 11 day attack on the garrison the British suffered 16 killed or died of wounds received and 39 wounded.

However, of the 1 550 animals (horses and cattle) in the camp, only 220 survived.

In 2019 a memorial to the animals was erected on the site of the battle.
