Major-General Geoffrey Barton died on 8 July 1922 aged 78. 

He saw service as Captain in the Anglo-Zulu War in 1879. 

During the South African War (1899-1902) he saw service in Natal and was involved in all the battles leading up to the Relief of Ladysmith, being wounded on 27 February 1900. 

During the Guerrilla Phase of the war he was sent to the Weston Transvaal, where he commanded forces in the Krugersdorp and Pretoria districts until the end of the war.
