Major-General Edward Brabant was born on this day in 1839.
In November 1899 he raised a local Regiment known as Brabant’s Horse to fight in the South African War. His command included the Cape Mounted Rifles, the Kaffrarian Rifles, and the Queenstown Volunteer. His unit operated primarily in the Eastern Cape with their most notable achievement being the Defence of Wepener against a far superior Boer force.
His son, Lieutenant Arthur Edward Brabant was wounded at the Siege of Ladysmith and died on 5 November 1899.
