Jan Christoffel Greyling Kemp died on 31 December 1946 aged 74.
At the outbreak of the South African War (1899-1902) he joined the Krugersdorp Commando and saw action in the battles in Natal.
In June 1900 he was elected a commandant and saw action at the Battle of Nooitgedacht, where he was wounded in the arm.
Kemp was promoted to Combat General early in 1901 and became one of de la Rey’s ablest and most daring officers, seeing action at Vlakfontein, Moedwil, Ysterspruit and Tweebosch.
At the Battle of Roodewal, in the absence of General de la Rey, he launched a recklessly brave attack on Major-General Kekewich’s forces.
Representing the Krugersdorp commando at the peace negotiations at Vereeniging he urged for the continuation of the war.
He was one of the minority of six who voted against the peace terms.
His later life was devoted to politics.
