After the Siege of Wepener, the Boers were moving northwards, with the British in pursuit. The Boers had reached Thaba Nchu, a mountainous area, some 60 km east of Bloemfontein. Tobo Mountain (referred to as Thaba in Captain Towse’s V.C. citation) was well defended by the Boers and they commanded the pass, Houtnek, through which the British were planning to travel.
Major-General Smith-Dorrien led the attack on the Boer position. During this attack a patrol, commanded by Captain Towse of the Gordon Highlanders unexpectedly came on a group of German volunteers, fighting on the side of the Boers and close fighting took place.
Captain Towse, leading the engagement, was shot in the head and blinded in both eyes. The battle lasted two days, and the Boers, losing key positions, decided to retreat and make their way to Clocolan.
It is reported that at the parade where Captain Towse was awarded his V.C., Queen Victoria shed tears when pinning the decoration.
