Kheis was a farm in the Northern Cape (close to the present day town of Groblershoop) on the banks of the Orange River. During the early months of 1900 the Free State Boers were active in the area recruiting rebels to take up arms against the British.
The British established a garrison at Prieska, under the command of Colonel J. Adye to monitor the district. When news reached Adye, late in May, that a Boer Commando under Commando Judelewitz had laagered on the farm, the British advanced on the position with a force of 350 men and four guns.
In a surprise attack the Boers were defeated and all the women and children, together with a number of men were taken prisoner. The British casualties were nine killed and 18 wounded.
